So who should Real Salt Lake protect in the Expansion Draft?

Photo

Well for Real Salt Lake the next big thing will be the expansion draft, RSL can protect 11 players as Portland and Vancouver will take turns picking un-protected players from current MLS teams.  When a team loses a player they can move one more to their protected list, and the max number of players a team can lose is 2.

So given the full RSL roster who would you protect?  I am working on my list, which should be out later this week but I thought I would open it up and see what you all are thinking, and why.

Players

Kyle Beckerman

Nat Borchers

Nick Rimando

Andy Williams

Jamison Olave

Jean Alexandre

Robbie Russell

Javier Morales

Alvaro Saborio

Chris Wingert

Ned Grabavoy

Will Johnson

Robbie Findley

Fabian Espindola

Nelson Gonzalez

Kyle Reynish

Tony Beltran

Dave Horst

Rauwshan McKenzie

Pablo Campos

Paulo Araujo Jr.

Collen Warner

Chris Schuler

Luis Gil

Tim Melia

 Alex Nimo

So in the comments post what 11 players you would protect and why.  You should know that Luis Gil and Alex Nimo are both still part of the Generation Adidas program (at least as far as we know) and would not need to be protected.

1) Rimando – He has many years ahead of him
2) Morales – The playmaker
3) Borchers – Rock in the back
4) Olave – See above
5) Johnson – Covers a lot of teammates mistakes
6) Beckerman – Completes the midfield
7) Beltran – Impressive young back
8) Warner – Good young talent
9) Gonzalez – Same as above
10) Paulo Jr – Great find and presumably good contract
11) Grabavoy – Depth in the midfield

Espindola, I can’t decide whether to put him on there or not, but I might put him on there over Gonzalez as most teams don’t know who Nelson is.

Findley, I can’t see another team taking the chance to grab him when he’s out of contract and could leave.

Sabo, the huge buyout.

For Sure:
1) Beckerman
2) Borchers
3) Rimando
4) Morales
5) Olave
6) Saborio
7) Johnson
8) Findley
9) Espindola
That leaves 2 spots. The following is who I would consider for those 2 slots (in order of preference):
a) Beltran- Young and I think the best outside defender with upside that the team has.
b) Paulo Jr.- Young, fast and I think the real deal.
c) Gonzalez- Hate to lose him, looks great at times, still very young. Still haven’t seen enough though to be totally convinced.
d) Grabavoy- Hate to lose him, but we have to lose someone. This one would hurt.
e) Warner- Hate to lose him too but don’t know who I’d rather give up to keep him.
Others to consider:
Wingert- Solid but not spectacular, can be replaced. Need to find someone who can cross the ball accurately consistently.
Russell- Solid but getting to the end of his expiration date. Can be replaced.
Williams- Won’t be picked up, getting long in the tooth.

Just a FYI

My list has changed 4 times in the last two days and once in the last hour. But keep your lists coming, I will be using your lists as part of my larger post.

Francesco Perri – Rimando, Borchers, Olave, Morales, Beckerman, Saborio, Espindola, Gonzalez, Paulo, Johnson, (Findley if he stays Warner if Findley goes).

Reed Rossbach – Rimando, Borchers, Beltran, Olave, Beckerman, Morales, Grabavoy, Sabo, Paulo, Findley, Gonzalez, really want to protect Schuler too…

So how does it work with Paulo? Doesn’t he have to go back to his team? I’d love for us to keep him, he looks legit.

He is on loan

So RSL has his MLS rights and would need to protect him (just like Saborio, and Nelson Gonzalez) if they want to keep his rights and hopefully eventually sign him (and others) to a long term deal.
