Real Salt Lake at Cruz Azul - match thread
OK, doubt I will be doing full updates on this one but I thought I would start a thread where you can add your comments and thoughts on the match. I will probably offer up a couple updates, starting lineups when I get them, thoughts at halftime, outrage at horrible officials ( I will post their names when I get the info), and my glorious victory rant as RSL become the first MLS team to get the win in Mexico.

Starting lineup for Cruz Azul: GK- Gutierrez: Pinto, Dominguez, Castro, Torrado, Pineda, Biancucchi, Cervantes, Villaluz, Orozco, Villa

jobbed
Bad call and the quick goal is pulled off the board and you have to believe that yet again MLS is getting jobbed by this crew.
RSL looking good
Earning better chances, more possession, more corner kicks. We’re all hoping that bad calls don’t decide this one. Also worried that late fatigue will do RSL in like the Crew last night.

bad calls already have impacted it
But I like what Jason said to the team, there will be a lot of bad calls, just keep playing. The conditions are awful but I think you can see what RSL is capable of as a team and right now I am feeling good about making them #1 in my power rankings. If they can keep it up in the second half, this could be a history making match for MLS.
2-1
An MLS team getting lucky in the CCL?! What is this crap?
RSL seems to be adjusting to the weather better than Cruz Azul so far. Well played by Saborio.

halftime thoughts
Wow, 10 minutes in and I was sure that RSL like so many other MLS teams was about to get jobbed big time, but despite the questionable calls the players kept playing, attacking and applying great pressure on the ball and it paid off in a clear PK call that was put away to make it 1-1, then despite the weather RSL kept attacking every ball and doing their best to play on. I was really reminded of the first match in RSL history, the hurricane conditions against the Metrostars back in 2005. Saborio proved that being alert and paying attention are how you have to play in big matches as it pays off and RSL are in front 2-1 at the half.
I can only hope that cooler heads and better conditions will dictate what happens in the second half as RSL could be onto something really big here for their team and MLS.
This is turning into a WATER POLO match LOL
Seriously though good for RSL… they could’ve easily folded after the early goal called back and early shoddy officiating led to azul’s first goal.
Win or lose, we will always be here for you.

Will they suspend the match?
This is about the same conditions as the Sounders away leg in the playoff round.
But RSL look really good. It’s been a while since they played this well away from Rio Tinto. And like you said on twitter, denz, they’re not allowing the officiating to affect their temperament.
I doubt they would
unless their is lightning in the area, which I don’t hear any reports of. The conditions will be awful but their lack of efforts to do anything at the half about it, makes me think they will continue play. It could be dangerous with these conditions for injuries and mistakes.
The rules about finishing matches and matches interrupted
If a match is interrupted before the completion of normal playing time or extra
time due to reasons of force majeure, a repeat match lasting 90 minutes shall
be arranged for the following day, thus avoiding considerable extra expense for
the visiting team. If it is still impossible to play the match the next day for the
same reasons, the match may be postponed by another day provided both
teams agree. If the match can still not be played on the third day, the
expenses thus incurred by the visiting team shall be divided equally between
the two teams.
4-1?
What could have been, oh how I would have felt much, much better about this match if it were 4-1 right now. hard for an official to do much about a 3 goal lead, but this one goal lead stuff is going to give me a freakin heart attack.
Wow 3-1
You know even before that goal, I was saying to myself that I was very impressed with the way Cruz Azul is playing. This is the class that should be shown by CONCACAF Champions League teams, no real diving, no real dirty play. Teams from Panama might want to watch this match to see how the game should be played.
damm
too much room in the box. OK now that we got that out of the way, time to get another goal. Come on boys, you have worked way too hard for this one.
Come on Robbie
I thought the game winner would come from the boot of Robbie Findley in the final 15 minutes of the match, but I would rather it be a 4th for RSL and that Fabi’s be the game winner. Come on Robbie get us the 4th goal tonight.
Indirect free kick
Wow the right call in a big moment in the area, this official has gotten much better than he was in the first 20 minutes of the match. Can we get the right calls for the entire final 15 minutes?
my thoughts exactly
this is now the time that RSL has to continue to attack and get the ball to Findley for the 4th goal. To hell with the draw, we need to fight for the win or loss this one outright.
Well that gives them the 4-3 lead over RSL
90 minutes
RSL simply failed to play for 90 minutes, not sure what change it was (Gonzalez, Findley, Williams)? but something simply changed so much that RSL simply failed to play the full 90 minutes. Now it will take a miracle to get a point, from what could have and should have been a win.
5-4 is your final score
RSL give up 4 goals in the final 15 minutes of the match, and 3 of them as a direct result of too many guys standing in the 6 yard box watching balls go right past them, hell at least get out of the damm way so Nick can try to make a save. The sorriest 15 minutes from RSL all season, after what may have been their best 75 minutes in the history of the club.
For 75 minutes
You overcome two bad calls that cost you a goal and give one to your opponent, but that doesn’t beat you. You overcome weather and a pitch that create nothing but havoc for both sides, you don’t survive it, you overcome it. You sit on the verge of making history for both club and league by getting a win in Mexico, you have outplayed one of the best teams in the tournament in their stadium and with 15 minutes to go you are ahead 3-1.
For 75 minutes you play what might just be the best 75 minutes in your teams history.
But matches are 90 minutes
Oh that dreadful fact that matches are 90 minutes long, I have to say that it was the worst 15 minutes in RSL history, as they allowed 4 goals to be scored against them. They had multiple players just standing in the 18 and 6 yard boxes watching as balls went past them, my god at least get out of the way to Rimando can try to make a save.
Simply horrible, and I have to imagine that the players who gave much for 75 minutes will not hear much praise for that, but they will likely get an ear full about the final 15 minutes.
