Andy Williams Deserves A Testimonial Match

Andy Williams has had a fantastic career by any account. He has made every Real Salt Lake fan proud. Personally, it was a priviledge to watch him work his magic on the pitch. Nothing gave me more pleasure than to watch Andy whip in the perfect ball. I still remember his awesome pass to Robbie Findley that capped off RSL's 6-0 against New England a few year back. Pure perfection and pure class by a great man.

This is why as RSL fans, we need to urge the front office to honour Andy Williams (and Jason Kreis for that matter) with a testimonial match. I know that idea of testimonial matches are a little outdated, but if there is anyone in the history of the club that deserves the honour, it is is Andy. The game should be played in pre-season as a warm-up. All the proceeds from the match should go to cancer research, a topic personal to Andy. The club should also televise the match and fans should be encouraged to bring signs supporting Andy.

Some of the possible participants could include Andy himself, coach Kreis, C.J. Brown, Robin Fraser, as well as his old MLS and RSL teammates. It would be a terrific way to send off an RSL original.

I like it

It could be a great idea to send of Andy in a proper way. To me, it is sad to say that the last time we saw Andy was a lost to LA Galaxy. I would support this match. I say the match should be the starting XI in the first season for RSL vs. the last starting XI he was with. Andy could start with the lastest crew, since he didn’t start the first home game.

Starting XI Past
D.J. Countess – Hasn’t played since 2008 (Retired?)
Rusty Pierce – Retired
Brian Dunseth – Retired. Analysis for Fox Soccer Channel
Eddie Pope – Retired. Director of player relations for the MLS Players Union
Marlon Rojas – Retired.
Chris Brown – Retired.
Brian Kamler – Retired.
Clint Mathis – Retired
Luke Kreamalmeyer – Free agent, still playing
Dipsy Selolwane – Playing for SuperSport United F.C. in Premier Soccer League in South Africa.
Jason Kreis – Coach, RSL, all around great guy.

On a side note, looking through some old RSL shirts/hoodies and found a hoodie I was given for Christmas one year that is a Jamie Watson hoodie. Classic haha.

actually

DJ played in South America for a few years, not sure when he officially retired or if he has. I think you could find a number of former RSL players who would love to play in such a match but it would be a shame to limit it to RSL players as Andy has had an impact beyond just RSL, his time with Chicago, New England and others should be remembered as well. It might be fun to see a team of his former RSL teammates vs. teammates with other clubs as part of a RSL double header.

Lots of options for RSL to consider.

Kreis scores on Rimando

Could you imagine the conversations after that in practice?
