Jurgen announces his first USMNT roster with some variety on it
Well the new USMNT coach is wasting no time in getting a look at some less familiar faces for the squad. Here is the 22 man roster for next weeks friendly with Mexico:
GOALKEEPERS (2): Bill Hamid (D.C.United), Tim Howard (Everton)
DEFENDERS (8): Carlos Bocanegra (Saint-Etienne), Edgar Castillo (Club America), Timmy Chandler (FC Nürnberg), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis), Heath Pearce (Chivas USA), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls)
MIDFIELDERS (7): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), Jose Torres (Pachuca)
FORWARDS (5): Freddy Adu (Benfica), Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Edson Buddle (FC Ingolstadt), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy)
When asked about his roster choices Jurgen made the following statement:
"One of the goals of the roster for this game and moving forward is to create competition at each position," said Klinsmann. "There are many players who are established as well as many players who will get opportunities, and we want there to be a healthy contest for spots on the roster. We will get a good look at where each player is as quickly as we can during the short time in camp, and we will finish with an exciting game against Mexico."
I like the selections of Freddy Adu, who was solid during the Gold Cup and brought a lot of energy, Brek Shea, who has simply been one of the best players in MLS this year, and Kyle Beckerman, who under Bradley was dropped from consideration too often but can bring a toughness that is hard to replicate. I think it is great for Kyle who had just about given up hope on future call ups, now a chance to show that he belongs with the squad. I am hoping that in the September match against Costa Rica that maybe we will get so see some more MLS defenders get a chance to get some time with the USMNT.
I think Jurgen is going to run a very open and fair selection process, I love making guys compete for the honor of representing the US, a first roster made with under a week on the job and I think many USMNT fans will be happy. It should be an interesting match, haven't see the Mexican team roster yet but you always should expect fireworks when these two teams meet.
What are your thoughts on the roster? Who would you like to see get called up in September?

Nice to see things shaken up a little
Hooray for Beckerman! Nice to see him get a shot, he deserves it.
Beckerman will be available to Real Salt Lake for this weekend’s home contest against the New York Red Bulls, and will re-join the team for the Saturday, August 13 match at Toronto FC.

Dempsey
Hey, on the like the third time reading this roster i finally realized that Clint Dempsey isn’t on it. Is there a good reason for him not being on this roster? Is it just because he’s in the preseason, or something bigger? It’s certainly not his play, right?
Preseason
I think he is a known quantity that will be with the team for a long time to come but that the next couple friendlies are about mixing in some players who haven’t had as many call up with some of the normal guys to do some evaluations without impacting the overall quality of the team too much.
I think the September matches you will see the first one against Costa Rica probably be mostly MLS guys, and the second one in Belgium will probably be mostly European based guys. This is about finding the players that Jurgen will want to use as part of the World Cup Qualifying matches.
Zach Loyd in Jimmy Chandler
US Soccer today announced that FC Dallas’ Zach Loyd would be replacing Chandler who is still trying to get back to full fitness.
Starters I Would Name (4-4-2)
GOALKEEPERS: Tim Howard
DEFENDERS: Carlos Bocanegra, Clarence Goodson, Heath Pearce, Tim Ream
MIDFIELDERS: Kyle Beckerman, Michael Bradley, Brek Shea, Jose Torres
FORWARDS: Freddy Adu, Juan Agudelo
SUBS: Bill Hamid (GK), Steve Cherundolo (DF), Michael Orozco Fiscal (DF), Maurice Edu (MD), Jermaine Jones (MD), Landon Donovan (ST)
I just want to say,
there has be someone other than ream you would put on that backline. Or do you see this as a chance for him to gain some experience so he can hopefully be productive?
A man from Dallas who bleeds red, not silver and blue.
Basically
I feel he could be a solid defender just maybe he didn’t flourish under Bradley’s style. Wanting to see him under Jurgen’s coaching before I make judgement. I wouldn’t mind starting him but if he starts to play like normal, I would send in Cherundolo.
More and more I think about this, I like the idea of not bringing along the big name guys. I know soccer needs to get huge in this country and Donovan is the big man but Bradley built this team around him and failed.
In my opinion Clint Dempsey should of been the man the team was built around. Even look at RSL: I know the desire is the team is the main star but a lot of the players play well when they have a midfielder that can control the game and dictate his players (Beckerman and Javi).
Also I want to see Nat or Beltran get called up. Both would fit in nicely instead of Ream.
