With the 36th pick in the 2012 Major League Soccer Draft, Real Salt Lake Selects: Sebastian Velasquez
Well it seem each year that RSL goes off the map with a pick and at #36 the selection of Sebastian Velasquez is a reach. I know nothing about this kid, he didn't go to the combine but google lead me to a couple of things:
He was a Jr. college All-American:
Sebastian Velasquez named NJCAA All-American
Sebastian Velasquez (Greenville, SC -Eastside HS) a sophmore forward has been named a NJCAA All-American Soccer Player for his fantastic contributions to the Pioneers District runner-up season.
Velasquez was awarded second team honors although he lead the country in goals scored (35) and in total points with (86). He also had (16) assists on the year.
There may be another player with that name, it seems who was part of the LA Galaxy Academy system at some point. I guess we will have to wait for the press info to hit.

RSL Combine product
So all the buzz right now is about how Sebastian was one of the top players at the RSL combine down in AZ last month, and while I wonder if a kid like this couldn’t have fallen to us later in the supplemental draft, it seems that he made a big impression on the RSL staff that saw him.
He did also play with the LA Galaxy Academy system, perhaps this was a little RSL revenge for our legit claim on Tony Cascio being denied by MLS, and LA getting a bizarre exception to allow them to sign a HGP who really wasn’t.
Should be interesting to see how he will transition to the MLS game.
OK,
This isn’t the kid who played with LA, who is close in age and similar in build and style.
He did play with Enzo at the youth level in Columbia according to RSL and Enzo.
wrong
he is not the same player who supposely played in L.A. he played at SMC. He played for Discoveries in S.C. with Enzo. They won the u-18 National title with Discoveries soccer club. He was also awarded golden boot of the tournament.
good player
i used to play with him upon occassion in SC when he was still in high school (i played d-1 ball out there and we had mutual friends from greenville). he was highly recruited while in high school by many of the good southeastern schools (furman really wanted him), but didnt want to go to college (i think for family reasons). very, very technical player – good in tight spaces, extremely quick and has a nose for the goal – the only player that i have played that was better at 1v1 was dempsey when he was at furman. the only question for him, i think, is size. i’m glad to see he is doing well.
thanks for the update
I have heard nothing but good things about him. I know he took some time to go to Spain and tried out for a couple clubs (including Barcelona) there. Hint, they don’t let just anyone try out.
It should be interesting to see how his reunion with Enzo goes, I think Sebastian if he lives up to what people are saying might just be the diamond in the rough of the MLS draft this year. Can’t wait to meet him and watch him play.
