Real Salt Lake selects 4 players via the MLS Supplemental draft

Well the first two rounds of the MLS draft took place last week and while many are giving RSL high grades for selecting Enzo Martinez, there are still a lot of questions heading into the pre-season (which for RSL starts next week). Today RSL will finish up their draft by selecting up to 5 players in today's supplemental draft. RSL does have the 6th and 17th pick in the first round of the supplemental draft and I expect that they will look to see if any of the players on their list are still available.

In 2010 RSL picked up Chris Schuler in the 3rd round (which would be the 1st supplemental round) and in 2007 RSL picked up Kyle Reynish in the 4th round of the supplemental draft. The reality is that RSL has been forced to use the draft this year to restock their roster, losing nine players in the off season and with the restrictions of the current salary cap it is likely that more players from the draft will make the final roster than at any time since Kreis/Lagerwey have been in charge.

If you look at the current RSL roster, only Tony Beltran, Chris Schuler, and Kyle Reynish were actually drafted by RSL, as the staff have built the team via trades, international signings, free agents and allocation lotteries. However with salary cap restrictions, and a number of open spots I think it is realistic that RSL might go to camp with at least 7 draft picks and probably 2-3 other players as well. Last year RSL was focused on Champions League in their preseason camp, this year it will be about filling the roster and identifying top talent.

So with the 6th pick in the 1st round of the supplemental draft RSL selects:
Andy Rose:

POSITION Midfielder

The rest of the RSL picks after the jump:

With the 17th pick in the first round of the supplement draft RSL selects:

Emiliano Bonfigi:

YOUTH INTERNATIONAL (ARGENTINA)

POSITION Midfielder

HEIGHT 5-10

WEIGHT 148

DATE OF BIRTH 04/15/1988

HOMETOWN Buenos Aires, Argentina

With the 17th pick in the 2nd round of the supplemental draft RSL selects:

Oliver Kupe:

He is a 6' 3" forward who played 4 years at Northwestern, here is a video bio clip of him:

and a highlight video:

With the 17th pick in the 3rd round of the supplemental draft RSL selects:

Benjamin Ubierna:

YOUTH INTERNATIONAL (PERU)

POSITION Midfielder

HEIGHT 6-1

WEIGHT 163

DATE OF BIRTH 11/22/1991

With their final pick (17th) in the 4th round of the supplemental draft RSL, passes.

So they will be bringing 7 draft picks into camp, this could be an exciting opportunity for some young players. I don't know how many of them will make it but clearly with RSL having only a total of 6 international spots and there being more than 6 international players in camp, the competition will be fierce for one of the final spots and a contract.

I expect that we will see at least 1 of our supplemental players make our roster in 2012. My early pick to make the RSL roster will be Oliver Kupe.

with Rose

remember you are drafting him for his ball winning and distribution skills, not his goal scoring skills. he can also play some CB in a pinch.

Win or lose, we'll always be there for you.

A Rose by any other name

Well it didn’t take long for RSL who has a depth of midfielder draft picks to trade their first selection in the supplemental draft in favor of a defender, it is Rose going to Seattle (not the Rose City) for the rights to Seattle’s Leone Cruz, who they took with the 21st pick last year. They didn’t sign him but still owned his rights, so RSL had to trade for the player who played his college soccer at SMU and played with the RSL reserves a couple times in 2011.

boring

I am tired of hearing about all these players we are acquiring when we know there is very little chance of them making the 18. I want to hear about some signees that are going to contribute!!!! Aghhhh. Grrrrrr!

Hate to tell you

The reality is that RSL lost 9 players in the off season, they will need to be replaced. If you are expecting some major signing well I hate to tell you that it is very unlikely to happen, there isn’t any cap room. We paid to take the option on Fabi and signed Ned to a new deal, we have a ton less allocation money than we had last year. So while they might bring in a veteran player at some point, it isn’t likely to be a big name.

Instead you are very likely to see at least 4 of our draft picks make the roster and maybe even more, with 30 roster spots available and spots 21-30 not counting against the cap, I expect we will offer a number of our draft picks some of those “Off Budget” spots

RE: Hate to tell you

If what you are saying is true, our team will not be as good as last years team. Call ups, injuries, etc, to our main core of players and draft picks to fill the vacancies? I hope I am wrong, but RSL will be weaker and the other western teams have gotten better.

how?

RSL spent most of the year missing Javi, we had to deal with Saborio being injured for the first half of the season, we had the short preseason with Champions League, we also had no expectations of Luis Gil or Chris Schuler. Each of those are issues that we won’t be dealing with, just the addition of Javi back into the lineup is enough to make RSL better.

The two main losses we had were Robbie Russell and Andy Williams, replacing either of them is going to be difficult, but we have added great depth to the midfield with Enzo and Sebastian. We have two guys who can likely work their way into the rotation of our outside backs, I actually am hugely excited at picking up Leone Cruz. He was my 1st choice for RSL to take in the draft last year before they traded the pick, while Seattle had great depth at outside back last year and didn’t need him, clearly RSL thought enough to bring him in for a trial last year as well as having him work with our reserves.

I would remind you that Nat wasn’t a huge name when we picked him up, neither was Robbie Russell, and Wingert was a role player for Colorado. So I wouldn’t dismiss signing a non-big name player.

I also don’t think think LA has done anything to get better than they were last year, and Seattle is in the same boat of not really having made any big moves. Colorado, FC Dallas haven’t done anything that I consider huge moves.

I think RSL didn’t need major moves, they needed to just get younger and cheaper, both out of necessity.

RE:

RSL unloaded over $300K from Alvarez, Russell, And Boma. Are you telling me all of that went to Espy and Ned? As much as I like Yordany, I don’t want a big chunk of our money being extorted from us from a USL D2 team.
Did Jason and Garth take those trips to Argentina and Japan with no money to find players? That is what I am talking about. Not big name free agent players here. Talented players they find like in the past (Javi, Jamison, Espy). That is what I am wanting to hear about. News about players they found on those trips. Players with more talent than young draft picks.

Finances

You have to remember that going into the 2011 season we had allocation money from Champions League (the further you go the more you get) allocation money from the trade of our 1st round draft pick, and in compensation for losing Robin. This year we get a smaller portion of Champions League money and none of the other funds.

They have a little money, but remember that when we first sign a player from overseas they usually aren’t making a huge amount of money. The options are expensive for many players, and often there are additional factors involved. The team hasn’t made any moves yet because they are trying to get finalized deals for Paulo Jr. and Yordany, both who could be huge players for us into the future.

As much as you might like a move to change things now, the reality is that the team is planning for the next 24 months, advancing and winning the Champions League, making another solid run at MLS Cup, and in the US Open Cup but the prize at the end is simply advancing to the Club World Cup. I doubt they would announce anyone until they actually sign them, that doesn’t mean that a number of players won’t be on trial or with the team during the preseason.

What I see is the team making moves to get younger and reduce their cap hit, the cap went up 5% from last year but every player gets at least a 5% raise with some getting 10-15% raises per their contracts. Almost all of our draft picks played the full 4 years in college, which is a huge advantage in getting players ready. Just look at Chris Schuler for proof of that.

roster

We have a lot of talent on the roster that wasn’t used very much last year, so while we may not have made the moves some people wanted, we should have good players contributing this year that weren’t last year. I’m thinking of Paulo Jr and Yordany. Yordany did contribute towards the end of the season while Beckerman was suspended, but with him being on board from the beginning of the year will really help our depth. Paulo Jr. had a massive injury last year, so you could almost treat him like a new signing this year, which should be exciting.

I think Gil can be a player that can replace Andy Williams as well, so I’m not sure why you think things are as bad as they are.

I’m almost more exciting about this year’s team than last year’s team. If even 1 of our draft picks works out, and Gil, Yordany, and Jr can perform like we all hope they can, it’s going to be a fun season.
