Coming in at number 9 on the Top 10 Goals of 2012 is Kyle Beckerman for this fantastic piece of movement in a 3-1 loss against San Jose Earthquakes.
RSL's anchor, Kyle Beckerman, scored four goals for Real Salt Lake in 2012 - his best haul for the club, and his second-best MLS year (7 for the Rapids in 2006 edges it.) He grabbed goals against LA Galaxy, San Jose, Toronto, and Portland - and his screamer of an equalizer against San Jose stands out. Now, of course, Real Salt Lake went on to lose the match, just like his tenth-placed goal in this list.
Beckerman nicks the ball from Ike Opara, builds a move with Javier Morales, receives the ball after a Saborio dummy, and beats two defenders before finishing neatly at the near post. In a word? Perfection, or something approaching it. Who says defensive midfielders don't score
It also exemplifies the sort of movement needed from the midfield that was, at times, lacking. It was a goal on the counterattack from a player who made a run from deep — after capitalizing on a weak giveaway in the midfield. How many times was that missing? Plenty. More of that in 2013, please.
It's often said that pass-and-move is the fabric of the game. Drop this goal into the evidence pile.
