Real Salt Lake selected midfielder John Stertzer from Maryland with the 12th pick in the 2013 SuperDraft.

With the 12th pick of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, Real Salt Lake selected midfielder John Stertzer from Maryland.

Stertzer opened the scoring at the MLS Combine and did well to score goals in his senior year for the Terps.

Matt Doyle, columnist for MLSSoccer.com, described Stertzer as "a big, athletic box-to-box midfielder who combines well going forward."

The addition in the midfield brings RSL's box-to-box spots to a more certain appearance: Grabavoy, Gil, Grossman, Alvarez, Stertzer, Velasquez and Martinez are expected to fill those ranks.

Most pundits had Real Salt Lake selecting a forward, but Garth Lagerwey has been outspoken about his desire to sign the best players available in the draft.

Real Salt Lake's second-round draft pick falls at #31, but given the trades that have been swirling around the draft thus far, seeing it drop off or change might not be the most surprising thing in the world.
