Player Ratings: Rimando, Plata excel in 1-0 win over LA Galaxy

Andrew Fielding-USA TODAY Sports

Nick Rimando - 9.5 This is close as I have ever come to giving a 10. The only reason I didn't give a 10 is because there was a sequence where Rimando gave a poor outlet pass which turned into a wide-open scoring opportunity for Keane. Luckily, he botched it. Rimando looked like he got caught sleeping. But besides that one instance, that might have been Rimando's best performance of his career. Unbelievable nine saves including a PK save in stoppage time against one of the best strikers in the continent that preserved the full three points for RSL. Of those nine saves, at least five of them were very difficult. He did pretty much everything he possibly could have done as a keeper. He's the best in MLS without a doubt.

Chris Wingert - 6.5 Wingert looked pretty sharp and as per usual positioned himself well to keep the Galaxy from getting too much past him that mattered. I didn't see a ton of offensive creativity from him, but he played his role well.

Nat Borchers - 7 Borchers is still the most cerebral defender on the team in terms of understanding where the attack is coming from and how to organize against it. The Galaxy attack is a hard one to prevent from getting chances at all, but Borchers led the defense very well.

Aaron Maund - 7.5 Maund had a solid game. The most impressive thing is how seamlessly he fit in against one of the most dangerous attacking teams in MLS having not gotten many minutes last year. He looked fearless against the likes of Keane and really got the best of the battle with Samuel. Plus, me made Samuel look silly with his attempt at the rainbow kick.

Tony Beltran - 7.5 Beltran had a great night albeit quiet. He was very sound from what I could tell and put in the extra effort running up and down the field over and over again. He kept the Galaxy wides at bay and was a huge factor in the RSL clean sheet.

Kyle Beckerman - 8.5 Beckerman's assist took a real vision for the game and the capability of threading the needle with his pass. He looks as determined as ever with probably the busiest off season of his career.

Javier Morales - 7 Morales, much like Beckerman, looks to be backing up his words of being hungry for a championship. That determination is going to pay off during the 30-plus game season.

Ned Grabavoy - 6.5 I thought Grabavoy could have done a bit more in the attack and doing more once he was in and around the box. He did really well connecting passes and defending.

Luis Gil - 6 I can't help but feel a bit let down with Gil's performance. Clearly there are high expectations for him this year and if he doesn't live up to them, it will be a disappointment. He has all the potential in the world and I didn't feel like he got off to the best start in 2014.

Joao Plata - 9 Plata had a league-leading four shots on goal and a nice dagger goal in the 80th minute. He looked great in all aspects of the attack and kept possession when needed. He created chances for Saborio and others.

Alvaro Saborio - 6.5 Saborio had a couple chances that he could have done better with, but he was clearly a focus of the Galaxy defense and created a few scoring opportunities.

Substitutes

Luke Mulholland - 8 Mulholland was robbed of a clear goal which would have been a hell of a debut. He seems to fit right into the team and looks like he should have a nice year.

Cole Grossman - 6.5 An interesting statistic from @ccb1212 is how often RSL scores when Grossman is on the field, that being every 26 minutes. That said, he has only seen somewhere around 120 minutes on the field. So far, the trend is sticking.

Jordan Allen - 6.5 Jordan Allen didn't see too many minutes, but the fact is that he saw the field, let alone made the 18with how deep RSL is as a team. He looked really calm and composed in the closing, high-pressure moments of the game.
