In the aftermath of the Oceanside city council voting down a proposal to hand land to Real Salt Lake owner Dell Loy Hansen, it seems to have become clear that Real San Diego is the proposed name for RSL's USL Pro team.
A report by San Diego's CBS 8 uses the name in discussion with the proposal, stating that Hansen owns that team.
That report also states that some players (they are not named) attended the meeting in support of Hansen's effort.
With that news, and with continued news of Real Salt Lake's move toward establishing a USL Pro team sooner rather than later to conform to MLS guidelines for affiliations with USL Pro teams.
The target date set by general manager Garth Lagerwey of 2016 for establishing Real San Diego, as outlined in a media day discussion by RSL Soapbox contributor Wes Brown at Soccer Newsday, would mean a temporary affiliation during 2015, when MLS is aiming for compliance. But knowing MLS rules, that surely isn't set in stone.
Real San Diego, then. How's it sound?
