As Expected Real Salt Lake takes a disinterested approach to the MLS re-entry draft

For Real Salt Lake they had no horse in the race, nobody out of contract that was available in either round 1 or 2 of the re-entry draft, and nobody that peaked enough interest for them to make a selection.  There were a number of teams that stepped up and made some interesting choices:

my thoughts after the jump:

I think DC United took a huge chance to offer Josh Wolff a second chance, we have seen the potential for so long but the final product has always been lacking at KC, maybe a fresh new place will be a great thing for Josh.

I was a bit shocked with the Chivas USA pick of Jimmy Conrad, who has been rumored to be considering retirement and I think saw his game drop off significantly last year.  He still is an on field general who I hope when he is done playing makes the transition to coaching because few have as good of a grip of how to play in MLS as does Jimmy Conrad.

It is interesting that LA with Edson Buddle, Landon Donovan, and David Beckham felt that they needed to try to add some offensive power (but this may put the Ronaldinho rumors to rest) as they chose Juan Pablo Angel.  Not a bad move but one that would likely require them to use their 3rd DP slot to sign him.

I am really confused by Sporting KC and Columbus, KC lets go of Conrad a KC legend and then signs Hejduk who like Conrad is getting older and has been on the decline.  It has to be a move to save money by offering new lower pay contracts.  Columbus who has cleaned house this year brings back Jeff Cunningham, who started with the Crew and has bounced around MLS on his way to becoming the all time leading goal scorer.  Jeff is a great guy who has the ability to score goals almost at will, but has a reputation as trouble in the locker room.

I think it will be interesting to see how Marshall does in Colorado, Gibbs had trouble adjusting and was sent packing to New England last year and then made available (and selected in the re-entry draft).  I also think it will be very interesting to see how Chris Seitz adjusts to being a backup again, I think being able to learn from Keller is a golden opportunity for him.

Late Addition:  I was also very surprised that neither of the new expansion teams selected anyone today, there were some players that could be very helpful to teams that have less than 1/2 their roster currently filled.

OK back to work for me,
