D.C. United is celebrating in Salt Lake City tonight.
Ostensibly the worst team in MLS — a mean feat — United defeated Real Salt Lake in the US Open Cup Final after sneaking a goal in at the trailing edge of the first half. There are no words appropriate for the occasion.
It was a case once again of Real Salt Lake conceding a sloppy, unnecessary goal then failing to break down the 11-man wall that ensued. It was, as they say, performed to the script written. Late chances, heartbreak, and the underdog winning despite the not inconsiderable gulf in talent and league position.
To go through this once again — it's painful. Having the first opportunity to lift a trophy at Rio Tinto Stadium then ceding it to the side that gritted their teeth as hard as they possibly could. There needs be no mention of the times, dates, and occasions. We all know them.
But hey — it's the magic of the cup, isn't it?
