RSL passes in first stage re-entry draft; Franklin, Zakuani taken with first two picks

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Unsurprisingly, Real Salt Lake passed in today's MLS Re-Entry Draft first stage, but a flurry of early activity in the draft did render some inevitable changes among Real Salt Lake's rivals.

The biggest surprise of the day was the selection of Steve Zakuani by Portland Timbers with the second pick -- which they acquired earlier in the day in a trade with Chivas USA.

That trade saw Portland defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste go to Chivas with their 17th pick in the re-entry draft in tow, with Jorge Villafaña going the other way -- with the second pick, claimed by Chivas for being utterly dismal through the regular season.

The other very notable move in the draft was LA Galaxy's Sean Franklin being selected by D.C. United with the first pick. They also selected Bobby Boswell from Houston Dynamo in the second round -- being then the only side to make a second-round selection.

In other rival-relevant draft news, Colorado Rapids selected Marc Burch from Seattle Sounders.
