RSL signs former Columbus Crew defender Rich Balchan

Real Salt Lake has officially signed former Columbus Crew defender Rich Balchan, a club press release stated today.

Balchan, who can play as a full back on either flank or in the center of defense, joined MLS as the 12th overall pick by the Crew in 2011; he made 18 starts in his rookie year, but injuries saw him not make any 2012 appearances.

"It's been kind of a long road trying to find a new team, so I'm excited to get back after it," Balchan said in a club-issued press release. "It's a good group of guys and a great staff. All the way from the coaches to the trainers, just top to bottom it's a really talented group and there's a lot of depth here. Whether you're playing in games or if it's in practice, it's all very competitive and we're all going to make each other better so it's just a great atmosphere to be in."

Balchan was waived by Columbus at the end of 2012 and trialled with Chicago Fire after being claimed off waivers. After being released from preseason camp by Chicago, he joined Real Salt Lake in early February.

A club press release said that Balchan will be available for selection on Sunday.

Balchan's bringing the roster to a complete 30.
