Shots, goals and fouls: RSL's season shaping up in strong fashion

James Bosworth

As others in the media have mentioned RSL leads the MLS in shots and SOG — and now is tied with Portland for most goals after Saturday's game.

Shots & Goals best/worst

  • RSL takes 14.8 shots per game with 5.8 on goal, while Toronto takes 9.8 shots and only 3.2 on goal.
  • 42% of Montreal's shots are on goal, while only 27% of DC's are.
  • 39% of Seattle's shots on goal result in a goal, while only 15% of DC's are.

Fouls best/worst

  • Chivas commits an average of 15 fouls per game, while Montreal only commits 10.5.
  • Dallas suffers an average of 14 fouls per game, while New York only suffers 10.
  • Every 6 fouls Montreal commits they receive a yellow card, while Seattle gets one per 11.7 fouls.

RSL isn't doing so bad compared to previous years when they were among the top in fouls.

  • 39% of RSL's shots are on goal with 26% of the SOG resulting in a goal.
  • RSL commits 11.3 fouls per game, they get a yellow card for every 6.9 fouls. They suffer an average of 11.5 fouls per game.

Yellow / Red card data may not be completely accurate since on the MLS site it's listed by player not by team, thus players who transfer to a new team also take their cards. It also doesn't appear to change to show any cards rescinded by the Disciplinary Committee (E.G. Martins from Seattle etc...) Thus that statistic is likely to be skewed.
