After a coin flip at US Soccer Headquarters, Real Salt Lake or Carolina Railhawks will host the next round of the US Open Cup, depending on who is victorious on Wednesday, with either FC Dallas or Portland Timbers the visitors.
All the pieces are falling into place for an extended run for Real Salt Lake, who have never been to the US Open Cup semifinal. A win against Carolina Railhawks on Wednesday would see RSL through for an August 7 semifinal.
With the quarterfinals looming, RSL will be looking to find a way around what will surely be a committed Railhawks defense; after facing Charleston Battery and having to fight back from a 2-0 deficit, and after having faced Atlanta Silverbacks in a grueling match in the rain — both of which went to extra time — Jason Kreis and his side will be looking to seal things earlier this time around.
Notably, Wednesday's match could give Kyle Beckerman and Devon Sandoval chances to become RSL's all-time leading goalscorer in the US Open Cup; both have three goals and are tied with Kreis and current RSL head scout Andy Williams.
