Three Real Salt Lake players were named to the MLS All-Star gameday roster by All-Star coach Peter Vermes, released today. Those players also happen to be the three Americans from RSL currently playing in the Gold Cup roster for the United States: Kyle Beckerman, Tony Beltran and Nick Rimando.
All three were coach picks and were not selected in the always-questionable fan voting before the All-Star Game. But it could be an interesting time frame for their involvement: Should the U.S. reach the Gold Cup final, potentially all three players could be playing only three days before in a match with significantly more meaning.
Whether or not this precludes All-Star involvement remains to be seen, but with a Real Salt Lake game in Colorado on August 3, the timeline becomes even more suspect. Beltran's involvement, though, would be less problematic, given he will be suspended for that match after receiving a red card in the final match before he departed for the Gold Cup.
While the recognition is nice, Jason Kreis is sure to be frustrated by the tight timeline involved.
