Josh Saunders will be out for an indeterminate amount of time after tearing his ACL and is set to undergo surgery next week, Aaron Falk of the Salt Lake Tribune reported today.
Josh Saunders apparently tore his ACL during Saturday's match against FC Dallas; he had difficulties just before halftime but came back out for the second half. On his first goal kick, he went down in what must have been excruciating pain.
Saunders' injury means third-string goalkeeper Jeff Attinella will be seeing more playing time than expected, with Nick Rimando potentially not returning until August, should the U.S. progress in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Lalo Fernandez, who recently went on a one-match loan, has returned to the club and will serve as backup.
Meanwhile, RSL communications confirmed that Carlos Salcedo underwent a gall bladder surgery and will be out for at least a week; he does have a chance at playing against New York Red Bulls on June 27 or Colorado Rapids on Aug. 3. With Chris Schuler still dealing with injury concerns and Kwame Watson-Siriboe out for the season, Aaron Maund and Nat Borchers are the only available center backs for Saturday's match against Sporting Kansas City. Chris Wingert can slide over as needed, as well.
