RSL picks Ryan Neil in 2014 MLS SuperDraft first round

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

With the 18th pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, Real Salt Lake selected Ryan Neil, a right back and midfielder from UC Berkeley.

Neil will now have to fight to make the squad, with Real Salt Lake by and large having a finalized squad -- particularly with 26 players under contract.

In an interview with Top Drawer Soccer, Neil described himself as a "technical" right back who likes to get forward.

This leaves RSL's right back situation with Tony Beltran, Rich Balchan, and now Neil as options. It remains to be seen whether Balchan will be more likely to play on the right or left, or whether Neil can play in other positions at a professional level.

Neil is RSL's only natural pick in the first two rounds of the draft.
