Luis Gil departing USMNT camp, heading back to Salt Lake City

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Amidst one of the more severe confluence of call-ups and injuries Real Salt Lake has seen in some time, Luis Gil will be heading back to Salt Lake City, leaving the United States Men's National Team camp.

The United States play Honduras on Tuesday, but with Javier Morales suspended, RSL was looking rather short in midfield — there were options at the top of the diamond, but none of them were particularly natural.

Gil's returning from national team duty is almost certainly by mutual consent with the likes of Jurgen Klinsmann. With the United States playing tonight, a possession-oriented player of Gil's ability could have made a difference in the match (of course, it was only a friendly.)

It's easy to imagine that Gil will be starting at the top of the diamond against San Jose Earthquakes. We're excited.

And no, Nick Rimando won't be coming with him. One out of two isn't bad.
