RSL to face LA Galaxy in first round of MLS Playoffs

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

With Portland Timbers pushing FC Dallas to the side in their ongoing search for a playoff spot (to be decided later tonight), putting RSL in third place, and with Seattle Sounders winning a tense affair with LA Galaxy to secure the Supporters Shield, Real Salt Lake have their playoff opponent set in stone. Or solid gold.

And — drumroll, please — it's LA Galaxy. Again.

The two sides have a torrid history, and this match probably won't be hugely different. In 2009, we faced off for that MLS Cup; in 2011, they pushed past us in a single-leg Western Conference Final before winning MLS Cup; and in 2013, RSL rescued their playoff campaign before going on to that other MLS Cup. (Sigh.) So let's hope we get a Western Conference repeat of sorts (and a different MLS Cup result, please.)

The match will take place on Saturday with the time to be announced, and we'll be there with bells on.

The search for the final spot continues apace, with Portland currently occupying it but Vancouver hopeful that they can find a win over dismal Colorado Rapids.
