Chris Schuler could be out for an extended period and may need facial surgery

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Jeff Cassar told ESPN 700's Bill Riley today that Chris Schuler will need between seven and 10 days for a full diagnosis on his broken face, and he may need surgery after he suffered a nasty collision with RSL's own Nat Borchers.

As there are apparently fractures in his orbital bones, the length of time required for a diagnosis becomes more clear. Cassar says Schuler is seeing specialists on the matter, and you might imagine it's the sort of thing that would rule Schuler out of action for a bit if surgery's required.

There are, of course, masks designed for this sort of thing, and while there's little doubt that Schuler would do just that given the opportunity, it will be important for him to undergo surgery first, should he need it.

In more encouraging news, Carlos Salcedo will be back with Real Salt Lake on Thursday after withdrawing from international duty. He traveled to meet with the Mexican U-21s, but in light of Schuler's injury status, spoke with his coach face-to-face and will be back in club duty.
