Garth Lagerwey is leaving Real Salt Lake, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed. Lagerwey is widely expected to join Seattle Sounders, although it is unclear what role he would take.
However, the only public statements from Lagerwey have revolved around his still being under contract at Real Salt Lake, and that no written offers have been made.
Spencer Checketts, who worked at ESPN700 when Dave Checketts owned the club and is now at 1280 The Zone, reported that a significant restructuring will take place, with Jeff Cassar taking on a more prominent management role, wherein he would report directly to Bill Manning. A technical director would also be hired, he said.
Other reports have indicated that the search for a replacement is in an advanced state, with various reports being more or less certain about the proximity of an agreement.
Still other reports have seen Lagerwey move to Atlanta's incoming MLS team, though those are less firm.
Regardless, we can say with certainty that Lagerwey is leaving Real Salt Lake following the expiry of his contract on Dec. 31.
