Aaron Maund surprisingly starts in season opener against LA Galaxy

Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

In a surprising move, Aaron Maund will start in place of the injured Chris Schuler, handing the 23-year-old only his fourth start for Real Salt Lake to start the season.

Carlos Salcedo was the popular option to replace Schuler, but Maund - who had one fine performances last season and one or two less effective ones - has been preferred to the RSL Academy graduate.

Maund was efficient in preseason, but Salcedo started ahead of him in what seemed like ostensibly the season opener preview, a 1-1 draw against Chivas.

Given Schuler is not on the bench, it's difficult to draw conclusions about when he'll be in a position to start again, but all will be hoping for a speedy return to fitness for the center back.

Jordan Allen and Luke Mulholland, both in their first year at the club, make the bench. Sebastian Velasquez, who was doubtful with a hamstring injury, did not.
