RSL victorious over LA Galaxy in nervy 1-0 win on Plata goal, Rimando save

Andrew Fielding-USA TODAY Sports

Real Salt Lake defeated LA Galaxy 1-0 to start the season on a positive note, with Joao Plata the lone goalscorer and Nick Rimando the indisputable difference between victory and defeat.

Joao Plata rocketed Real Salt Lake in the lead in 80th minute with a fantastic finish past Penedo, finding incredible space in the box with a run past the defense to meet a fantastic pass from Kyle Beckerman.

But it was Nick Rimando that was the hero of the match, stopping an unjustly-given penalty kick from Robbie Keane in the third minute of three minutes of stoppage time.

There were few good opportunities for Real Salt Lake in the first half, with Javier Morales and Joao Plata both having strong shots saved by Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo.

The first-half was marked by strong performances from surprise starter and newly goateed defender Aaron Maund, whose play was strong throughout.

Luke Mulholland made his debut for RSL, coming on for Luis Gil around the 60th minute. Gil had struggled to find much entry into play, with the midfield being bypassed for much of RSL's play. RSL academy product Jordan Allen made his debut as well, coming into the match late on for Plata.
