RSL to rebrand? Sources say yes after embarrassing name insults irk club owner

Andrew Fielding-USA TODAY Sports

In a surprising but not unprecedented move, Real Salt Lake may be rebranding following extreme reactions to the name chosen by former owner Dave Checketts.

Sources indicate club owner Dell Loy Hansen was tired of Twitter pundits mocking the name on a daily basis. Those pundits often cited Real Salt Lake as one of the least sensible names in the MLS.

"I get Sporting Kansas City, and I get FC Dallas, but Real Salt Lake? There's not even royalty in Salt Lake City," one source told RSL Soapbox under the conditions that their names not be shared, given their intimate role with the club. "I can entirely see why Hansen would want to go for something a little closer to home."

Hansen is purportedly going to open the new name to a vote, but if history is any indication, the name will probably be chosen on a whim without regard to any fan poll.

Regardless, high-ranking sources have handed us three names likely to make a fan vote:

Rapids Salt Lake Futbol Club
Real Racing Club de Salt Lake, S.A.D.
Ballspielverein Borussia 05 e.V. Salt Lake
