Luis Gil called into US U-21 Olympics prep camp

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Luis Gil has been called into a United States under-21 camp to take place next week, according to a US Soccer press release. The camp is a long-term preparatory setup to prepare for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.

Gil's involvement doesn't bode well for his World Cup involvement, but it hardly rules it out. He is certainly one of the most experienced players in this lineup, and it's largely made up of players with Under-20 involvement. Gil was one of the leaders in that setup, and it would seem he is now.

With a very strong month in the buildup to the World Cup squad, Gil could well find himself back in contention for a World Cup spot, though. There still remains no player in the squad who can really play the role Gil does, and if Jurgen Klinsmann wants to persist with his diamond outlay, maybe there remains room for him.

Gil shouldn't miss any RSL matches as a result of this call-up, with the camp ending with a friendly against Mexican side Club Tijuana on Wednesday.
