From the beginning of the match, Real Salt Lake looked like a team on a mission. They had plenty of chances in the first 10 to 20 minutes of the match. Shortly after, there was a lot of back and forth between the Salt Lake team and the Whitecaps with the Whitecaps coming out on top many times in the midfield. The refs called plenty of fouls but the game was starting to get out of control. In the face of that, RSL had a few great chances to get some goals in the first half but were unable to make it happen.
The second half continued much as the first with plenty of fouls and choppy play until Borchers was called for a penalty on a tackle in the box against Mattocks. Replays show that the call was very controversial with what appears to be a clean tackle. Mattocks converted the penalty kick and almost immediately after there was a scuffle between the two clubs with Joao Plata and Matias Laba being the protagonists. Plata had the last laugh when he scored a goal in the 81st minute off a great ball from Kyle Beckerman. RSL looked determined to get the win but came up short on a couple more chances that could have sealed a great comeback win and they left with a point instead of three.
