New York controlled much of the first part of the game with five corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the game. Real Salt Lake had a hard time getting control of the ball but once they got the ball in New York's half good things happened. In the 17th minute, RSL was threatening to score and Plata followed through on the threat with a beautiful thread-the-needle goal in the 19th minute.
Around minute 35 New York pretty well took control again and Rimando came out on a defender near the edge of the box leaving a wide open goal that the whole stadium thought was going to turn into a goal. Lucky for RSL, he shot it wide left. There were a couple missteps by each club but Plata had the lone goal of the half.
The second half started much like the first with New York pressing and RSL having multiple defensive breakdowns. In the 57th Salt Lake paid for their miscues and Thierry Henry calmly slotted it past Rimando tying the match at one a piece. In the 71st Chris Schuler had a point blank header off a corner that Robles somehow saved. The Red Bulls decided to park their men in front of goal for the final 15 minutes and Real tries to break it down.
Towards the 80th minute Garcia took a few barrel rolls on the ground and was carded for diving and RSL lost possession for a good while. Salt Lake had a few more chances but could not capitalize and left with a point.
