Phanuel Kavita, a center back who is graduating from Clemson and came through the Real Salt Lake-Arizona academy, will join Real Salt Lake, the club confirmed today. He'll likely sign a homegrown deal at the club.
This is following a report from broadcaster Jonathan Yardley.
Kavita, from Salt Lake City, started every game in his four-year tenure at Clemson and served as captain during his final two years there. He previously played for the RSL-AZ side after standing out at Highland High School, which abuts Sugar House Park. During his summer breaks at Clemson, he trained and played in reserve matches with Real Salt Lake.
His Clemson career saw him earning plaudits on Top Drawer Soccer's draft "big board" ranking the top college seniors. He placed in the top 50 on their latest ranking. During his 22 matches in 2014, he scored twice.
Kavita, born on March 9, 1993, will turn 22 just after the start of Real Salt Lake's season opener against Portland Timbers.
It's unclear initially whether he'd play for Real Monarchs or be part of the first team from the get-go, but he's clearly well regarded by those involved at the club. With only two rostered center backs, Kavita's addition would be a boon for the club.
