Portland bests RSL in Sandy

Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

The best chances for Real Salt Lake came at the bookends of the half. The first was early with Joao Plata moving laterally at the top of the box and shooting but went just wide right. The field looked slippery with various players and even the ref falling down at one point. RSL seemed to lack motivation and quality for long periods of time with Portland controlling for the better part of the half. Nick Rimando came up with a couple of saves being in the right spot at the right time. Just before the whistle Kyle Beckerman took a shot from distance that with a little more precision could have been a goal. No goals occurred and the half ended knotted at nil-nil.

RSL put themselves in a tough spot for the next 45 with Jamison Olave fouling Lucas Melano from behind when he had a clear chance against Rimando. The ref saw fit to award a penalty even though the foul was outside of the area and sent him off leaving RSL with ten men on the field. Fanendo Adi scored from the spot and the Timners found themselves up a goal on the road. RSL started pushing forward more and taking more risks as time closed in on them. Errant passes left them wanting for much of the time they had left and even though they came close to tying, RSL's Playoff hopes were all but dashed at home.
