From the get go Municipal sent a lot of balls over the top and tried to catch the Real Salt Lake back line sleeping. There was a shaky moment right at the beginning and Carlos "Pescado" Ruiz had a good shot about halfway through the half but outside of that the club from Guatemala did not have much going for them. Around the 30th minute, reminiscent of the last game for RSL, they started knocking on the door and kept banging until just before they headed to the tunnel when Javier Morales took a corner and found Jamison Olave who headed it home cool as a cucumber. A weight was lifted off their back going to the break.
The game definitely opened up after the teams took the field again. Municipal committed numbers going forward knowing they now needed two goals to advance. Around the 75th minute things got heated when the Guatemalans drew a free kick about 15 feet above the area and protests turned to exchanged words turned to shoving. Municipal took the kick well but Nick Rimando outmatched him and prevented the tie. In the 87th, frustration set in and Municipal resorted to cheap fouls to stop play. RSL kept their poise and earned the advancement to the next round of CONCACAF Champions League.
