Weekend update: RSL's playoff hopes bolstered by Houston, Portland results

New, 5 comments

Real Salt Lake's playoff hopes got a big boost this weekend as results around the league fell almost entirely in their favor — particularly where Houston Dynamo and Portland Timbers both dropped points.

San Jose draws 1-1 with Vancouver

While this one could have gone slightly better, San Jose drew against Vancouver Whitecaps and that suits us well enough. Now, if we'd beat them last week ... well, that's a totally different thing to talk about now, isn't it? Regardless, it was Chris Wondolowski, of course, that scored San Jose's equalizer, and we don't really want him getting hot right now.

San Jose sits at 44 points from 32 games.

Games remaining: Sporting KC (H), FC Dallas (A)

Portland drops 0-1 to Sporting KC

We might still love Nat Borchers here in Salt Lake City (this, despite Portland's affinity for his beard as a cultural touchstone). He sort of came through in this match for us, being one of two defenders that Kansas City forward Kristian Nemeth obliterated as he scored the game-winning goal for his side.

This elevates Real Salt Lake's match against Timbers to an even bigger state. I can't be happier about that.

Portland sits at 44 points from 31 games.

Games remaining: RSL (A), LA Galaxy (A), Colorado Rapids (H)

Houston Dynamo downed 1-4 by FC Dallas

Dallas obliterated Houston Dynamo, and in doing so, they gave us another reason to hope. It was spectacular, and it puts Real Salt Lake a good position to pass them up in the next match — despite not playing them.

Houston sits at 41 points from 32 games.

Games remaining: Seattle (H), Vancouver (A)

RSL recovers for 2-1 win against Colorado Rapids

Real Salt Lake's weekend luck looked to be running out early in the first half against Colorado Rapids when Kevin Doyle scored a smart header to put the home team ahead — but goals from Luke Mulholland and Joao Plata saved the day — and RSL's playoff hopes.

Real Salt Lake sits at 41 points from 31 games.

Games remaining: Portland (H), FC Dallas (H), Seattle (A)

Seattle rescues draw against LA Galaxy

If catching Seattle seems like it's a stretch, it's because it sort of is — but playing them in the final game of the season will make for a scintillating game. If they drop against Houston, RSL might actually have a chance to pass them up if everything goes well. Just let that sink in for a second.

Seattle sits at 47 points from 32 games.
