With the growth of USL Pro, NASL, and MLS in the last year, the 2015 US Open Cup will take on an even larger set of teams — 91, a new modern-era record.
To accommodate the growth and to avoid MLS teams facing their third-division sides, the round of 16 will be divided into four groups of four, with each team having a geographic proximity, save for those clubs for whom there is shared ownership. That will determine the bracketing for the round of 16 and the quarterfinal, but the semifinal will feature another random draw, again with dual-ownership sides being separated.
