RSL's home opener ends in bizarre 3-3 draw against Philadelphia Union

A wild game with a lot of defensive errors for Salt Lake resulted in a strange tie.

The first whistle of the year blew at Rio Tinto Stadium and the match started off with plenty of energy. Philadelphia took advantage of RSL's formation early and had a couple good chances that could have gone in if not for some impressive saves from Nick Rimando.

Salt Lake started to click and a free kick just outside the box was awarded. Javier Morales pulled off a difficult task and put a bullet in the top right corner. The shakiness in the back persisted and over the next eight minutes Aristeguieta put two goals in to give the Union a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room. Faulty errors proved costly for RSL.

RSL came out from the half with a determined look and before long earned another set piece that led to a goal from Jamison Olave (via an Olmes Garcia rebound), with Javier Morales on the assist.

Apparently the defensive miscues were not cleaned up and Jamison Olave deflected a long ball past Nick Rimando to give Philadelphia the lead again. In the late part of the game Luke Mulholland earned a PK and Alvaro Saborio put it in the net with force. The game ended 3-3 at home for Salt Lake.
