BYU's US Open Cup run didn't move beyond the first round as they fell in penalties to a brewery-run amateur club, Harpo's FC from Boulder, Colorado.
With Harpo's finishing their penalties remarkably cleanly for an amateur side and BYU struggling to put theirs away, the match swung wildly between dull and intensely exciting.
That wasn't the only US Open Cup news of note for Utahns, as Real Monarchs learned their opponent: PDL side Long Island Rough Riders, who, in 1997, made the quarterfinals of the Cup. That match will be on the road, with the Rough Riders defeating storied USOC winners Brooklyn Italians, who had some cup success in the pre-MLS era. The Rough Riders won that one 3-1.
If Monarchs go forward, they'd have a coin flip for hosting rights for the third round, and it's unclear if they'd face another USL opponent (or some other lower division) or an NASL team, who enter the tournament in that round.
That Long Island Rough Riders - Real Monarchs match will take place on Wednesday, and presumably, it'll be streamed for the world to see. Let's hope. (On another note, isn't it great that we can be relatively assured that matches will stream, one way or another? We've come a bit of a long way.)
