Despite controlling the match for most of the match, a late concession took Real Monarchs from a second win to yet another draw against Portland Timbers 2.
Emery Welshman scored the game's opener in the ninth minute with a brilliant far-post shot, with Fito Ovalle feeding the striker from inside the middle third. His finish from a tough angle put Monarchs up 1-0, where the scoreline stood until the 87th minute.
Portland's Rundell Winchester scored an equalizer in the 87th minute, when former RSL man Will Johnson sent in a fantastic cross from the right flank. Winchester's goal will surely disappoint Monarchs, who gave up two late goals last week against Austin Aztex to lose 3-2.
Boyd Okwuonu, on loan from Real Salt Lake, played 90 minutes and looked strong, with this his first match since suffering a shoulder injury while on international duty with the United States U-23s.
Johnson, better known in Salt Lake for his years with Real Salt Lake than for any play with Portland Timbers, played 90 minutes as he continued his recovery from a broken leg sustained in September.
