Real Monarchs face Long Island Rough Riders face off in US Open Cup second round

Real Monarchs will have their first stab at a trophy today as they take on USL Premier Development League side Long Island Rough Riders in US Open Cup competition.

Entering in the second round, like other USL teams, Monarchs have an opportunity on their hands — the oldest continuous soccer competition in the United States is within their grasp. Whether or not they're good enough is another story, but we've seen amateur sides shooting through the tournament before, and in 1999, non-MLS Rochester Rhinos won the whole thing.

Judging from a photo the team posted on Twitter, the traveling side at least includes these players:

  • Goalkeepers (2): Eric Osswald, Victor Rodriguez
  • Defenders (3): Darion Copeland, Riley McGovern, Emilio Orozco
  • Midfielders (5): Lennon Celestino, Ricardo Velazco, Alec Sundly, Lucas Baldin, Tyler Arnone
  • Forwards (6): Maikon Orrellana, Coco Navarro, Eti Tavares, Leon Brown, Max Rauhofer, Emery Welshman

There are almost certainly other players who have travelled (one would readily imagine, at least) — to the tune of two others, probably, with an 18-man squad. We'll update this list as we learn more. There's no word yet

If they do win this one, they'll face the winner of Harpo's and Colorado Springs at Rio Tinto Stadium in the third round.

This match won't be broadcast, but do look for results here as quickly after the game as possible, as usual. If you're looking to follow live, you'll want to follow @RealMonarchs and @LIRoughRiders on Twitter.
