Real Monarchs defeated Long Island Rough Riders 1-0 to move to the third round of the US Open Cup, when they'll host the winner of Harpo's FC and Colorado Springs Switchbacks on May 27.

Switchbacks were unsurprisingly leading the amateur Harpo's at halftime during that match, and we'll have full results pending completion of that match.

Monarchs' sole goal against the USL PDL side came from Ricardo Velazco, who, according to Real Monarchs on Twitter (the match was away and not streamed), combined well with Max Rauhofer to create the goal.

Surprisingly, the Monarchs deployed in some sort of diamond (with a four-man midfield and all), and while that doesn't say anything about general goals for the organization, it does make things a little interesting with the teams' ability to be flexible with formation.

Tyler Arnone, playing at right back during the match, is a former Rough Riders stand-out.

Danilo Acosta, academy center back, featured for a Monarchs side with only one Real Salt Lake player on loan. Fito Ovalle, a midfielder on loan from Real Salt Lake, played 20 minutes in the match, so he will not be able to play for RSL in the U.S. Open Cup, as he's cup-tied.
