The return of Jason Kreis and the other former RSL players coincided nicely with a great first half performance from Salt Lake. RSL was able to keep David Villa at bay for the first 45 minutes by keeping a watchful eye on him and double or triple teaming him at times.
Real created some quality chances and Devon Sandoval was able to assist on a poised goal from John Stertzer. Alvaro Saborio had a nice take on a free kick just outside of the box but Josh Saunders was able to stop it. The offense was flowing pretty consistently for Real Salt Lake and they went to the break with confidence.
RSL picked up where they left off with nice possession play with a purpose. It didn't take long for Luke Mulholland to find Sabo and he did what he does best heading it past Saunders. A nice surprise came near the 60th minute to a nice applause.
Javi created some good looks for his teammates and the pressure was on New York for plenty of the time. A bad giveaway in the 86th minute nearly gave New York a goal but they were unable to convert. Joao Plata also made his return in the dying minutes of the game to and even louder applause and the match ended on a high note, with RSL winning two-nil.
