Real Salt Lake's path in the US Open Cup was made a little more clear today after third-rounders Seattle Sounders FC 2 downed Portland Timbers 2 after extra time in Seattle.
The fourth round match will take place on June 16 (8 p.m. kickoff planned) at Rio Tinto Stadium — five days before RSL takes on Sporting Kansas City at home in an MLS match.
Unsurprisingly, the two sides have never met — especially as Sounders 2, one of the top teams in USL, was created this year. With 19 points from 10 matches, Sounders 2 are atop the Western Conference. Their 22 goals leads the league in those, as well.
Real Salt Lake's last foray into the fourth round of the cup ended in a 2-1 loss to NASL side Carolina Railhawks.
In more timely news, Real Monarchs take on Colorado Springs Switchbacks in third-round action, with the winner facing Colorado Rapids. It's worth noting that Switchbacks and Rapids are not affiliated with each other.
