RSL beat Sounders 2 at home, win 2-1 to progress in US Open Cup

After being down at half, RSL came back to win and move on in the Open Cup tournament.

Real Salt Lake had a generally slow and lackluster first half against Seattle Sounders 2. The biggest issue did not seem to be formation or tactics, but rather an overall lack of urgency from the home side. Devon Sandoval had a good chance around the 15th minute but went just wide after some decent build up play from Luis Gil and Olmes Garcia. The only other meaningful chance from RSL was a shot from Joao Plata that also went just wide. Beyond that, Salt Lake did not have much creativity and after an injury to Justen Glad, RSL's defense was disorganized and Sam Garza scored before the half for S2.

The first 15 minutes of the second half were very similar to the first half but once things got choppy and Javier Morales came on things quickly turned around for RSL with Plata scoring off of a nice assist from Olmes Garcia. Soon thereafter a back pass from Soinders 2 was handled by the keeper and Morales knocked home a free kick to give RSL the lead. A couple more chances each way did not find their way to the back of the net and RSL advanced in the tournament.
