After Tuesday's win over Seattle Sounders FC 2, Real Salt Lake's US Open Cup campaign pushes forward into the fifth round. While the team doesn't yet know their opponent — that will be announced at 9 a.m. on Thursday — it has been narrowed down to three regional opponents.
Those three? Portland Timbers, LA Galaxy, and San Jose Earthquakes, all teams with which RSL has a pretty significant history. The draw will determine the opponent and where they'll play. The match will either take place on June 30 or July 1, so there's not a whole lot of time for turnaround.
LA Galaxy beat PSA Elite by a sound 6-1 margin to progress, while the other California side still in it, San Jose Earthquake, edged Sacramento Republic on penalties. The big matchup of the round was a Cascadian one, where Portland Timbers ran out winners in a highly controversial 3-1 extra time win over Seattle Sounders that featured three red cards for the Seattle side — on top of the forced removal of Obafemi Martins through injury.
The U.S. plays in pre-Gold Cup action on July 3 against Guatemala, and with other nations starting their pre-Cup camps, RSL could conceivably be out a handful of players, including Nick Rimando, Elias Vasquez, Demar Phillips, Kyle Beckerman and Alvaro Saborio.
