Real Salt Lake will meet Portland Timbers in USOC fifth round

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

One of Real Salt Lake's favorite opponents from 2013 — especially in that famous US Open Cup run that ended in dismay-inducing defeat to DC United — will be coming to Salt Lake City for the fifth round in that very tournament: Portland Timbers.

Portland, current home of former RSL mainstays Will Johnson and Nat Borchers, last played Real Salt Lake in the US Open Cup back in 2013, when they met in the semifinal. That meeting ended 2-1 with RSL running out winners.

If RSL does manage a win on June 30 or July 1 — a short turnaround, to be sure — they'd face the winner of LA Galaxy and San Jose, who are on the other side of the regionalized group. That match would be a US Open Cup quarterfinal.

While tensions have cooled between the two since Jeff Cassar took over as Real Salt Lake coach — the conflict of personality between Portland's Caleb Porter and RSL's Jason Kreis was obvious — having two RSL veterans at their disposal should render this match a very interesting one.
