Real Salt Lake beat Portland Timbers in the U.S. Open Cup tonight, winning 2-0 in a convincing display.
Most of the first 45 minutes consisted of Real Salt Lake threatening to threaten. There was a lot of play up the right side of the field but an unfortunate amount of errant passes. Aaron Maund provided the closest scoring chance but went high. Jeff Attinella came up with a good save off of a Urruti shot from distance with some mustard on it. The other two close calls Portland came up with were ruled offsides.
The latter 45 were much more eventful with better fluidity and passing. Olmes Garcia was able to lay the ball off for Sebastian Jaime who put it far post and in to open up the game.
Not too long after, Joao Plata drew a penalty in the box and Javier Morales did one of his methodical run-ups and then powered it in the left netting. Jeff Cassar shored up the defense and RSL moves on in a 2-0 win.
