There are plenty of storylines to watch today, and that's because the MLS transfer deadline is today at 3 p.m. — yep, today.
Wondering what's going to happen at Real Salt Lake? I think everyone is. Let's break down some of the major themes right now.
Burrito Martinez
Real Salt Lake still hasn't announced (or officially confirmed) the arrival of Burrito Martinez, but it was my understanding that a deal was at least close. RSL technical director Craig Waibel never said Burrito Martinez was the player they were after, but he did say on Tuesday that he expected ink to dry on a contract in 24-hours or so.
We'll see if that happens, but we may also not see an announcement today. That would be less than ideal, but it could happen.
Luis Gil
Is a move for Luis Gil in the works? There's no hard evidence, but on Tuesday, he was scratched from the bench — what apparently was a "healthy scratch," or a coaches' decision, according to Chris Kamrani.
Gil has been a polarizing (at best) figure at RSL this season, and some are antsy to see him leave. I'm not sure I'm ready, but any situation where a player is making veteran-level money and is scratched from the bench — not even the starting XI — because of a coaching decision is a head-scratcher.
Anyone else?
If Real Salt Lake does move Gil (or some other player), expect it to open up room for another player. That doesn't mean we'll see a player-for-player trade, but that we could be looking internationally, too.
If that happens, we'll talk about it. It hasn't happened yet — or, at the very least, it hasn't been announced.
