Real Salt Lake's efforts to land their primary transfer target — presumed by many to be Juan Manuel "Burrito" Martinez — has to come a standstill, RSL coach Jeff Cassar told ESPN 700 today.
"This one we had set up has come to a standstill," he said. "Not that it can't be done at some point, but it's going to be difficult."
Despite the uncertainty around the signing, Cassar told Bill Riley on the Bill and OC Show.
"It still could get done," he said. I felt good last night that the deal was done (…) I think it could happen at any point."
"When you're dealing with players that don't know how every facet of the league works," he said. "It takes time, people get cold feet, then they realize this is how MLS works. We're going to continue to work hard."
If this target falls through, Cassar is confident that a player could end up joining RSL, but did emphasize that he was happy with the makeup of the squad at current.
"There are many, many good players that are still out there that can be signed or can become free, out of their contracts," he said.
The transfer window closed at 3 p.m. today; Real Salt Lake can still, by some means or fashion, sign players who are out of contract. We'll dive more into that in the coming days.
