Jaime loan rumors unsubstanted but not impossible, Waibel says

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Rumors started swirling today about a potential loan move for Sebastian Jaime back to Chile — Universidad Católica specifically — but Craig Waibel put the brakes on those rumors in an interview today on ESPN 700.

Those rumors started after two Chilean news outlets, CDF and T13, surfaced, although neither offers any source for the notion.

The biggest issue? Nobody's called him about it, Waibel said, which means any murmuring of a loan at this point would be speculative at best.

"I haven't read them or received a phone call yet, so unless there's someone else doing a deal, I'm not sure," he said. "As of now, no contact."

Despite all that, Waibel also emphasized the fact that he's open to moves like that in a broader context.

"I have to be open to everything, and in regards to Sebastian (Jaime), he needs to be happy and needs to fit the style of play," he said. "Last year, we didn't quite get there. He had some very good games for us, but we haven't seen that clear-cut convincing transition yet, so I have to be open to it."

That attitude toward Jaime is part of a broader philosophy Waibel takes toward player movement — and it's one that will sound familiar to Real Salt Lake fans.

"We're always open to the conversation and open to conversations with our players," Waibel said. "We really want to make sure we're doing right by them and have them in an environment they want to be in."
