2016 Player Profiles: Emery Welshman

Emery Welshman’s potential is evident after a breakout 2015 season with the Monarchs, but injuries sidelined the young attacker in 2016.

Emery Welshman, to put it simply, is a real success story of Major League Soccer’s partnership with USL. The talented attacker was signed in January before the 2016 campaign started. Bouncing around since 2013 after being released from his hometown club, Toronto FC, the strong, fast forward was added to Real Salt Lake as a depth piece.

Signed with RSL: 2016

Welshman made no appearances for RSL in 2016.

Welshman’s contribution to the Claret-and-Cobalt was delayed after the 25 year-old was sidelined due to injury. The hip issue was addressed mid-season when Welshman underwent a successful surgery, and six weeks later he underwent a second surgery on his leg. These two surgeries ruled Welshman out for the remainder of the season.

It was a disappointing year for such a talented attacker but his attitude and the press out of the club is they do not believe his 2016 will diminish any of his skill going forward.

Getting match fit is Welshman’s first priority in 2017. Expect the attacker to spend at least the first part of the coming season with the Real Monarchs. As the forward situation remains the strongest aspect of the Claret-and-Cobalt, Welshman will be relied upon to continue to add squad depth.
