Cassar on new RSL contract: “It’s a three-year deal”

RSL’s head coach hire isn’t changing this offseason — or potentially any time soon.

Real Salt Lake coach Jeff Cassar has been given a three-year contract at the club, he told ESPN 700 today in an interview with radio commentator Bill Riley.

There’s no word to the exact nature of that contract, but he did say that there are “goals and stipulations” involved.

Quotes and excerpts from his interview follow.

We did introduce a lot of new players, and that’s going to happen again next year. That’s exciting. It’s an exciting time for our club, our fans and our organization.

It’s a three-year deal. There are goals, and if the goals are met, you’re rewarded.

I don’t think there’s just one thing at the top of the list ... there’s multiple things you need to do to stay at the top.

As a young coach, I have to recognize that, regroup the players, and make sure the belief stays there. For whatever reason, the confidence just left the group when we weren’t able to get the points ... That’s started to show a little bit at the end of the year.

Where things went wrong was really the last 8-10 games where we weren’t able to find our way.

We made great strides, we had great young players ... that’s very promising for our group, and I’m really excited to usher in these young players even more in the next few years.

This is a results business, without a doubt. I think we made big strides from last season to this season, and I believe we can make even more strides. As we do that, everything will work itself out. Blessed with this opportunity and really excited.

No one is pleased with how it ended. I think there’s only going to be one team happy at the end of this year.

I think I’ve grown a lot, and I still have a long way to go.
